Academics

Academics

This program is designed for engineering students who want to learn Spanish and gain insight into Spanish and European culture while immersing themselves in Spanish university life.  As you start planning for your time abroad in Spain, it鈥檚 helpful to consider how your academic experience at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) may differ from what you鈥檙e used to on your US college campus, and how this enhances your scholastic learning.

How will your learning preference adapt to a teacher-lecture method that emphasizes independent study? What challenges and opportunities do you anticipate with a different grading system using a 1-10 grade scale? The program allows 爱游戏下载 students with no knowledge of Spanish to take classes at a state-funded, public Spanish university in English in a variety of topics. Not only can you enroll in Engineering courses but in any level of Spanish language, Humanities, Business or Economics, among others. Choose from 爱游戏下载 elective courses and UC3M courses in audiovisual, communication, computer, electrical, electronic, industrial, material, mechanical, telecommunication, and telematics engineering.

Think about any changes in your study habits when you register for direct enroll coursework at UC3M where nearly half your grade is based on only final assessment. Consider how your academic accommodation may require earlier and more frequent communication with 爱游戏下载 staff before your arrival in Madrid.  What home school course requirements can be replaced with alternate course electives offered at the Spanish host university? Engineering courses at UC3M follow a lecture format for the first four to six weeks then switch to lab work or smaller group sessions. 爱游戏下载 students may also take UC3M International School courses, which focus on Spanish language and culture courses with other US college students in English.

Attending the 爱游戏下载 pre-departure online orientation is important as we review the steps for your successful UC3M course registration. 爱游戏下载 collaborates closely with the UC3M International School to advise students during the in-country registration add/drop period. One of the indirect benefits of UC3M classes is that 爱游戏下载 students can learn how to collaborate with students from different cultural backgrounds, while expanding their own international job career network, and by gaining insight into the professional workings of a cross-cultural collaboration.

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M)鈥was established in 1989 and is recognized as Spain鈥檚 most prestigious public institution of higher education. It follows a U.S. academic calendar system for US visiting college students and has one of the highest percentages of full-time and tenured female faculty in Spain. 爱游戏下载 students take engineering classes on the Legan茅s campus. Students can also take classes at the main campus, Getafe, which offers a wide variety of disciplines, from business courses to sociology, economics, media, communications, political science, and law. Depending on your housing location, your commute time from Madrid city center to both the Legan茅s and Getafe campuses can vary from 40 to 70 minutes in public transport because the UC3M classrooms are located outside of Madrid麓s city center.

爱游戏下载 courses are offered at 爱游戏下载 Madrid, near the Puerta del Sol 鈥 a well鈥搆nown public square in the city's center.

Arizona State University: Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous sessions that fit within the 爱游戏下载 academic calendar, so you can study abroad with 爱游戏下载 while continuing to meet all your academic goals.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 爱游戏下载 staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Academic Culture

Unlike a U.S. college or university, where students typically have a greater amount of flexibility and freedom in course electives and degree progress, engineering courses at UC3M are highly focused and academically challenging.  Students complete a lot of daily reading and homework assignments in the direct enrollment courses at UC3M. Attendance at lectures is required. Class schedules are varied and, depending on your class group sections, are offered anywhere from Monday to Friday. Classes range in size from 25 to 80 students, and classrooms are modern and comfortable. Coursework and exams are to be completed as assigned, on schedule. UC3M courses run from early September until mid to late December in fall, and from late January to late May in spring.

Early departure is not allowed in fall and spring. 爱游戏下载 students take their UC3M final exams in December during the fall semester and in late May and early June during the spring semester.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You鈥檒l receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

UC3M classes are taken in English or Spanish, depending on the student's language level 鈥 regular university classes are open to Spanish and other international students. Engineering School courses are taught in English and follow a lecture format for the first four to six weeks, and then switch to lab work or smaller group sessions. It鈥檚 common for a UC3M course coordinator to instruct with a co-teacher who alternates teaching lectures with performing lab research. Most STEM courses favor depth in a specific area of study at an accelerated speed of learning and incorporate online coursework. UC3M students typically favor working in peer study groups and sharing class notes to keep up with the learning pace of classes.

ASU online courses meet in 鈥渟essions鈥 that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 爱游戏下载 courses begin or end. You鈥檒l need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you鈥檙e given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your 爱游戏下载 location.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students鈥 grades in 爱游戏下载 courses are based on attendance, class engagement, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

At UC3M, students are graded on class participation, class activities, homework assignments, exams, papers, and/or oral presentations. Professors give numeric grades based on a 10-point scale, which are converted to U.S. letter grades. The Spanish university system, including the UC3M, does not apply a grade curve system as in some U.S. higher education systems; UC3M students typically study consistently throughout the semester to pass a course successfully with the all-important final exam.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any 爱游戏下载 student. 鈥淧ass/fail鈥 or 鈥淎udit鈥 is not allowed for 爱游戏下载 students. Please see the 爱游戏下载 Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.
