Academics

The Semester in Madrid program allows 爱游戏下载 students to take all 爱游戏下载 courses in various disciplines at the 爱游戏下载 center, located near the iconic Puerta de Sol, the main transportation hub of the city center. Students also have the unique opportunity to combine their 爱游戏下载 coursework with classes offered at one of two local host institutions or exclusively take all of their classes at the university.

Both partner schools are located in Madrid麓s historic city center and offer a full range of semester courses in English with other international students: During the fall semester, students can select a host institution track with The Fundaci贸n Ortega y Gasset y Gregorio Mara帽贸n (FOM) or during the fall and spring semester,  select a host institution track with the Universidad Antonio Nebrija (UAN).

Motivated students also can apply to an elective internship for credit and gain hands-on professional work experience in a local organization.

Note for students taking courses directly from Host Institution(s):鈥疭tudents are required to stay in Madrid until they have completed all their academic work, including their final exams.鈥疧fficial host institutions fall exams are in December, and official host institutions鈥 spring exams are in May. Early exams at the host institution are not possible. As it is impossible to confirm your exam schedule prior to your arrival, if your priority is to leave Madrid as soon as your university final exams are finished, please book an airline ticket with a low change fee or a flexible departure date.

Language placement鈥€撯€疨rior to departure for Madrid, all students planning to take Spanish language classes must take an online placement exam. Results determine appropriate placement in language courses. Placement in many upper-level courses depends on a high score.

Arizona State University:鈥Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous sessions that fit within the 爱游戏下载 academic calendar, so you can study abroad with 爱游戏下载 while continuing to meet all your academic goals.

Academic Culture

Courses typically include lectures, discussions, critical analysis of readings, case studies, audio-visual documents, field trips, and require active participation from the students. Language courses privilege work by tasks and group collaboration. Active participation of students is required given the communicative approach of these courses.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You鈥檒l receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

Host institution classes are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday. 爱游戏下载 classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday and exceptionally have at least one Friday class. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments and weekly quizzes.

ASU online courses meet in 鈥渟essions鈥 that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 爱游戏下载 courses begin or end. You鈥檒l need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you鈥檙e given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your 爱游戏下载 location.

Grading

In language classes, students are normally graded on weekly quizzes, exams, attendance, homework assignments, oral presentations, and class participation. Grades in the content courses are based on class participation, a mid-term exam, research papers, oral presentations, and a final exam. Each instructor determines the exact breakdown of grades. Attendance is mandatory and absences affect final grades.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any 爱游戏下载 student. ASU awards grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," " B," "B-," "C+," "C," "D," or "E.鈥 鈥淧ass/fail鈥 or 鈥淎udit鈥 is not allowed for 爱游戏下载 students. Please see the 爱游戏下载 Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.
